Sons of Temperance: organisation for teetotallers

Enfield

The Enfield Division held a tea and public demonstration on February 24th. A good number sat down to tea, after which a procession was formed, headed by the Enfield temperance brass band and the banner of the Division, lighted with lamps kindly lent by Bro H Wilson. The procession went through the principal thoroughfare to Christ Church Hall, where a public meeting was presided over by Mr Neville, who was supported by Bros Wightman, M.W.P., S Hawley, P.G.W.P., and Harris, Woodfield, and Sawyer of the Enfield Division.
The meeting commenced with ‘To the Work’, followed with prayer by Bro Harris. After the chairman’s remarks, Bro Hawley addressed the meeting in his usual characteristic style, which was highly appreciated. Bro Harris gave a brief outline of the work in connection with the Cadet Section, the results being very satisfactory and encouraging. Bro Wightman, after referring to the loss sustained by the death of Mr Gough, enlarged upon the last words of that great temperance hero, ‘young man, keep thy record clean.’ After a few words from Bro Dr Ridge, the meeting closed with the Doxology. The Christ Church Hall choir were present, and rendered some solos and choruses during the evening, under the conductorship of Bro Hatch. Votes of thanks were given to the chairman, speakers, choir, band, in fact all who took part in the meeting.
On March 3rd, four were proposed for membership, of whom two were admitted. Several more expected.

About the Sons of Temperance

Having previously been founded in the United States, the Order of the Sons of Temperance of Great Britain and Ireland was instituted in 1855. Thus for over a century and a half the Sons of Temperance, as a Friendly Society, has had an outstanding record of service in providing life insurance and savings schemes exclusively for teetotallers.

If you are a past or present member of the Sons of Temperance (or the Cadets of Temperance), or are a teetotaller, or share a concern over society’s problems caused by alcohol we’d love to hear from you.
