News of the Divisions

The members and friends of the Sir Wilfred Lawson Division [Portsmouth], spent a most enjoyable evening on New Year’s Eve, to celebrate the occasion with musical honours and a supper at their Rooms, Claradon Street, Lake Road.
A very enjoyable programme had been arranged, in which Bro Hy C Gapper gave some very amusing, but strikingly accurate, phrenological character readings of those present; solos were rendered by Bros Fryer, Cole, and Frank Pearce, and Miss Pearse; a recitation by Mr. Albert Muspratt; banjo and violin solos by Messrs. Heath and Fred Pearse, the latter being the pianist of the evening; Bro Ninnis adding effect with the bones.
The midnight moments passed with Miss A Gapper rendering with great effect, an appropriate solo, accompanied by the various instruments present, all joining in the repeat chorus. The M.C. (Bro Mead) then wished all “A Happy New Year.” The gathering was brought to a close at 1.30 a.m.

Teetotalers club

Having previously been founded in the United States, the Order of the Sons of Temperance of Great Britain and Ireland was instituted in 1855. Thus for over a century and a half the Sons of Temperance, as a Friendly Society, has had an outstanding record of service in providing life insurance and savings schemes exclusively for teetotallers.

If you are a past or present member of the Sons of Temperance (or the Cadets of Temperance), or are a teetotaller, or share a concern over society's problems caused by alcohol we'd love to hear from you.
