Temperance Resolution
“That this 96th Annual Conference of the Order of the Sons of Temperance of Great Britain and Ireland, assembled at Hove, Sussex, in affirming its opposition to the liquor traffic and the evil it continues to spread, calls public attention to the disastrous consequences of the use of intoxicants in relation to road safety. The appalling loss of life on the roads and the injury inflicted upon the community (in particular to little children), demands legislative action to prohibit a driving licence being issued to any person known to be an habitual drinker. It further urges that more drastic penalties be imposed on those involved in accidents whilst under the influence of alcoholic liquor or in charge of a motor propelled vehicle and found to be under such influence.
“Regarding as it does, the manufacture, advertising of, and increasing expenditure on intoxicating liquors as a grave social evil, this Conference joins with its kinsmen overseas and wholeheartedly supports the petition forwarded to the Throne through the Secretary of State at Ottawa by the Grand Division of the Order of the Sons of Temperance of Nova Scotia, deprecating the official use of His Majesty’s name in liquor advertisements, and with them respectfully requests the cancellation of all Royal Warrants issued in favour of dealers in any kind of alcoholic liquor.”
(Resolution passed at 96th Annual Session of The Order of the Sons of Temperance. May 1951)
Having previously been founded in the United States, the Order of the Sons of Temperance of Great Britain and Ireland was instituted in 1855. Thus for over a century and a half the Sons of Temperance, as a Friendly Society, has had an outstanding record of service in providing life insurance and savings schemes exclusively for nondrinkers.
If you are a past or present member of the Sons of Temperance (or the Cadets of Temperance), or are a nondrinker, or share a concern over society’s problems caused by alcohol we’d love to hear from you.
